Hearthstone has a lot of pride about how well players can supposedly do in the game without spending any money, but spending money definitely helps.
Pre-ordering a new expansion gives you a much better value than waiting for it to come out. Many cosmetic items are only available for a limited time.

In-game notifications when friends: -Obtain a legendary card. -Finish an Arena or Duels run (with win/loss numbers). -Achieve a new rank. Important to note though these notifications only appears WHILE playing - you will not receive notifications outside of the game. Also they recently fixed a glitch that caused these notifications to appear more frequently than intended.
Price per card pack goes down the more you spend at once - only when spending real life money. Pre-order bundles are especially guilty of this, see Artificial Scarcity.
