Some parts of the gameplay require more in-game currency than before as the story progresses.
All lessons and a majority of the quests require you to use energy during a timer of 1, 3 or 8 hours. When a timer has been started, you cannot start another timer until it has finished. Some times you have to wait a certain amount of hours before you can start another part of the quest.
If you start a lesson or a part of a quest that has a timer, you cannot pause the timer. You can exit your game, but if you do not come back to use the required energy in time, the quest will fail and you'll have to do it again.
You can spend real money on energy, gems and in-game currency which are needed to progress in the game.
It does end eventually, but the more you progress in the story it takes longer to complete each in-game year, and you are given a variety of side quests as well.
The vast majority of gameplay is very repetitive and tedious. More variety would be more enjoyable.
