In order to progress with the story and get better stats, you have to do repeatable classes, which have minimal variations.
It's mostly about story progression.
You can spend money to buy more energy/coins/etc. in order to have an advantage over players in competitive events. Spending money also makes it easier/more possible for paying players to complete non-competitive events (some events can only be completed by saving up a larger amount of resources over time or paying real-life money).
It sells time-limited outfits that are likely to never return and offers them through events (which sometimes can be completed without paying, but sometimes can't). The game will even say an event is "ENDING SOON" when it just got added. There are also time-limited side quests that occur whenever a player reaches a certain point, which require a lot of time and attention (and possibly money if you don't have enough time).
You can buy gems, coins, and other in-game currency for real money.
It is not never-ending, but it feels like it is. Story progression takes more energy the higher you get and you also have to complete time-limited side quests in between story progression, which makes it feel like you'll never catch up.
In addition to the energy system (which makes you wait 4 minutes for 1 energy), there are timers you have to wait for before doing many optional activities and sometimes before starting the next task in the story or a side quest.
You can skip timers by paying gems, which are primarily a premium currency.
The game uses an energy system, so you have to wait for your energy to recharge before continuing, which makes it hard to play on your own time. It also has time-limited quests that force you to be extra focused on the game.
It's easy to accidentally spend gems (rare to come by without paying for them) on energy when you don't want to.
