I'd argue that this is the entire game. Competition aside, though, you're given rewards for winning that put you ahead of the other players and this is obvious. If you don't spend to win, you won't be given currency that will allow you to remain winning. This is made worse by the arms race meta shift that happens frequently.
There is additional energy assigned at several time points during the day that are only available for 2 hours. Missing this puts you 'behind' other players that do, in your shard.
Difficultly is set by the developer. Some characters you own behave differently or unpredictably in events or are given preloaded turn meter (advantage) in order to artificially increase difficulty and thereby effort/grinding/spending to overcome.
You're even given a 'galactic score' to prove it.
Every package has a chance at certain characters which may or may not be the ones you want. These are usually available for in game currency.
PvP matches are timed. Everything else can be paused.
The game often puts timers on content so it can't be played all at once and you need to log in seven minutes or when your energy refreshes.
Every day, you need to assign energy towards mindless button pushing / grinding. This button pushing could easily be automated, but isn't.
