I believe that that you need about $300 in order to max out one of the two inventories. I have a friend, who is addicted to the game (he speaks and thinks only about it), that he maxed out both inventories in one month with real money.
This game is 99% a grind.
You have to wait for long, unnecessary and unskipable animations for everything. You have to wait 2 minutes in order to play raids, even if you don't wait for anyone to join. Even the menus are designed to waste your time.
You trade pokemon.
All the items are cheap in this game, but all are for single use, and some times you waste them by mistake, so you have to buy them again.
Events and Community days do not last long. I have a friend that used a vacation day from work, in order to play in a community day event.
The in game currency are Poke-coins and they are used to hide the real price of items
There are limited time events, but they are more fun than malicious.
Some rewards are intentionally obscured (such as Pokemon encounter rewards for completing research). Missions are rewarded randomly for logging in once daily, as well as spinning PokeStops, which could be considered random rewards.
Raids and PokeStops both have timers and cooldowns preventing players from playing when they want.
