Collecting free rewards in a certain time window, league battles are every 6 hours, etc. In events called "heroic races", where they randomly put 8 players together to complete tasks as quickly as possible, there are things called pools, which is a limit to how quickly you can complete nodes or tasks without spending in game currency.
When you're in an alliance, there's an obligation to contribute to chests, and many alliances kick out members if you don't get enough points for them.
Everything is timed. Literally everything. I cannot think of a single thing you can play infinitely without using in game currency.
You can buy better dragons, buy more gems to skip things, etc
Gems and event coins are so useful in the game, but quite hard to get.
They're always adding new dragons, new events, and when you do reach the highest arena it resets every time there's a new season and a new required element.
SO MANY ADS OMFG There's a whole floating thing where you can watch up to 45 ads over a period of time for rewards, and you can use ads to speed up things like breeding, hatching, habitats, and sometimes food.
There's a daily rewards chest, there's a calendar, there's a limit to how much gold a habitat can produce so you need to check back periodically to collect those, and so on.
Newer, stronger dragons are introduced over time. Previously, category 5 dragons were the strongest available. Then, it was category 9 dragons. (Category number is a general ranking of strength). Now, there are Heroic dragons (category 11) and Mythical dragons (of the legendary rarity, category 10, technically strongest because of the way empowerment works). Dragon skills and shields were introduced. Plans for introducing additional levels of empowerment have been discussed by SocialPoint.
Players can trade dragon orbs. Doing so costs trade essences and the orbs you are giving to the other player. Players can only trade if they are in the same alliance.
