In order to level up characters and level up their talents, or upgrade weapons, gain artifacts etc you must complete domains. Given the high amount and variety of things requiring level up materials and the limitations on being able to obtain those materials, it takes quite a bit of grinding. Artifacts especially are rare to get the kinds and stats you want in the first place.
Given that the main attraction to the game is to gamble for characters and weapons, yes you are constantly put in a state to try and grind or pay real money in order to obtain these things. Plus there is an extremely slim margin for guarantee for obtaining these higher valued items/characters.
There are certain materials and rewards that can only be done on certain days. Meaning if you do not play and specifically do the things that provide those rewards, you will miss out on obtaining vital materials until another day or week.
There are dozens of achievements that can be obtained from mundane to difficult tasks. From simply finishing a quest or catching a bunch of fish, to trying to do complicated elemental reactions or shooting a bird mid flight.
Pay for Welkin Moon which provides 90 primos everyday you login for 30 days. Everyday you are given 4 daily commissions to complete to get 10 primos and other small rewards. Then you have to report to the Adventurers Guild to say you completed said commissions and get somewhat better reward.
If you do not play the game you can miss out on events that have important lore that is referred back to later in the game but is a non returning event, or the event changes when it returns, which leaves new players or players that missed out unable to obtain this lore in game. If you do not stay constantly up to date in game, you heavily risk spoilers being everywhere online.
Virtually all rewards for domains have some sort of variability. Be it the amount, the quality, or the stats of an item.
It does give you a limited amount of resin, 160, to use to do domains and boss fights in order to obtain materials. Every 8 minutes a single resin is replenished. There are several ways to replenish resin but these are limited, but are more accessible if you use real money.
It is an expanding open world game. There are new parts of the world or events being added constantly and in order to keep up with what is happening, especially to avoid being spoiled online, you must be actively spending a lot of time playing the game to complete quests in order to stay up to date. However, even as a player that plays virtually every day for several hours a day, I still cannot finish exploration and quests of an area before a new one arrives.
Because I have put real money and an exponential amount of hours into the game in order to obtain better characters and items, technically speaking, my account is better or more valuable than someone else's that is new, doesn't play as often, or is free to play. Meanwhile someone who spends a lot of money will undoubtedly have a better array than me as well.
