Monster habitats have a limit to how much coins they can hold before production stops until the next collection. There are also special gem-producing items that must be visited at certain times to collect the gems or else they could not be a loss instead of profitable.

Collecting coins and breeding monsters as well as growing food to level up monsters.

This game has no true end.

You can buy coins and gems by using real life money.

You can gain gems for recommending friends to play the game (only a limited amount of gain though).

You can visit other people's islands and give them food to level up social monsters which will allow them to breed and get new varieties of social monsters. If you do not do this you may get removed from friend lists.

Hard to breed monsters as well as expansions can make a game more valuable than others.

Certain monsters, items, and quests are only available during certain times of the year.

Monster breeding and egg hatching timers can last between 30 seconds to several days. Building habitats and extra islands also take time. Farming food takes time as well.

You can pay to buy gems which allows you to skip breeding, hatching, farming, and building timers. You can also skip trial and error breeding for rare monsters by using a large amount of gems (which is hard to obtain without spending money).
