The game's main gameplay loop is destroying asteroids and collecting the valuables that drop from it. Though you could put the money earned from this, you could also use it to generously speed up cannon fusing, as well as purchasing various upgrades. You're not entirely intended to grind for these upgrades, but it's entirely possible to ignore the main objective (using your currency to bring flora to the planet) and grind for upgrades. Upgrades that help you progress faster.
