The shop often have cycling limited time subjects.
Events are frequent, and almost impossibly hard to complete even if you begin participation as soon as it starts, many exclusive moths and items are obtained this way. Certain moths have to be lured at certain days or months, and can't be lured without premium currency or until up to the next year.
You can run out of space for collected moths, both in the main area and storage, it can be expanded for free but the costs get large and time consuming enough to just encourage using premium currency.
Some collections have a quest to prefect them, all collections give you cosmetic items for completion. The compendium counts what you have vs. the total.
The compendium records collections, achievements, and quest completion. Some achievements require total completion of some collections, some collections require completions of quests, some quests require certain moths in collections.
Randomized free gifts can be sent to up to 5 players you have friended a day (or more with premium currency), sending these gifts gives you points for rewards you get which are not insignificant for completion.
Some premium currency items that give you things can run out, normal currency becomes almost useless once all items that are purchased with them are claimed. This encourages buying more premium currency since the things it purchases does not run out.
It is pretty much an idle game, you do a small amount of tasks and wait for their cooldowns, you wait for many things in the game. Timers are chopped up so you have to come back for the timer to resume.
Events that happen every week for ~5 days that, if you want to get far in them, require you to come back every 1.5 to 2 hours. Finishing these events is near impossible since you need to return almost every time you get the chance, especially when sacrificing sleep is not discouraged.
Because completion of the game takes so long, time investment and collection can make it feel valuable. A completion score as well as a compendium in game makes this feel like it is quantified.
