That's the point of rogue-lites. Levels, monsters and reward items are random.
You get badges, but they have no value beyond "yay I did it"
Badges are available for accomplishing certain goals, however, they are not mandatory and do not change gameplay; many of the badges are unlocked simply by playing the game normally.
It does give achievements for relatively small events, like slaying 10 enemies or collecting 100 gold (very easily reached early on). However, this is not used in a predatory way, and be seen to serve as a way to show character progression.
Though given that everything is reset every time you die (which happens often) that doesn't seem manipulative to me.
