You lose a heart/life for leaving a level. Eventually times out if you try to hold the app in the background. Within half an hour.

Characters make a sad face with sad music when you fail a level. On its own it makes sense, but in context it always asks you to spend an item/money to continue playing before failing you. So essentially they're making a sad face at your choice to not continue (one character shakes their head)
